It is what they call "HD Tuesday" and they play only 50s and 60s music.

The rest of the time, KRTH is playing similar stuff as the last few years, albeit with a few more spins of Elvis, Ray Coniff, and the Beach Boys. Nice. Still need to dump some of the KOST dreck, but it's a little better.

If you REALLY want great Xmas oldies that won't bore you, check out WLNG, from Long Island. Online at wlng.comMariehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15465932438165154367noreply@blogger.com11tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-564698759278448498.post-21819162123795163622010-11-14T17:59:00.001-08:002010-11-14T18:07:55.148-08:00Still watching....So...you thought I wasn't still keeping an eye on KRTH and the Xmas music. Well, you were wrong. I've deleted the SPAM and am BACK!

It's 2010. Thanksgiving is coming soon. Will Jhani Kaye play good, great, or horrible Christmas music? Will he simply copy KOST FM in a cowardly and sad effort to ride their coattails, or will he do something unique and different that offers us a choice?

Most likely the former, but you never know.

Interestingly, last year saw KOST adding more of the KRTH type tunes (Sinatra, Bing, etc) to their list. Shows you that everyone loves the classics.

Let's hope we hear CLASSIC Xmas tunes on the CLASSIC station, and leave the easy listening / modern material to KOST. Anyone who wants to hear Lionel Richie, Barry Manilow, and the Carpenters is already listening to KOST. Let's hear some good stuff on KRTH. Ventures, Sinatra, Chuck Berry..... You got the idea. For God sakes, leave Mannheim Steamroller to PBS.

And bring back Boney M.Mariehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15465932438165154367noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-564698759278448498.post-12794693433103152172007-11-26T20:15:00.000-08:002007-11-26T20:47:57.917-08:00It's beginning to look a lot like XM this year.Looks like we've got the same playlist as last year. About half KOST music, and half K-Earth music, with the real classic K-Earth songs (Beach Boys and Elvis) in light rotation. Mannheim Steamroller is once again the #1 played band. Same songs being played over and over again - little variety.

Sigh.....guess it'll be XM this year. If you haven't sampled their Christmas offerings, they are truly superb. WCBS-FM is also another great option, with a deeper playlist than KRTH anyway.

Thanks again Jhani Kaye for ruining a great Christmas tradition, keeping FM boring, and giving listeners fewer choices on the dial. Your narrow vision and lack of respect for your station's heritage is quite remarkable.Mariehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15465932438165154367noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-564698759278448498.post-53830396970752225392007-11-18T19:18:00.000-08:002007-11-18T19:25:24.372-08:00Beach Boys or BarryWell, it's been a year since K-Earth mangled Christmas with its easy listening yawn-fest of Barry Manilow and Lionel Richie. In the meantime, their ratings (non-Christmas, non-easy listening) have soared. Perhaps program director Jhnai Kaye no longer feels the need to copy KOST-FM for a ratings boost? In a few days we will know. A promising sign is that Kaye has NOT followed KOST in the lamentable decision to broadcast Christmas music BEFORE Thanksgiving. Good for them.

How about a compromise, Jhani? Play a LITTLE Mannheim Steamroller, Cliff Richard, and Carpetners, but keep the ol' Motown, Beach Boys, Chipmunks, and Elvis rollin' in.Mariehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15465932438165154367noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-564698759278448498.post-58688681953650345112006-12-24T10:25:00.000-08:002006-12-24T10:28:22.824-08:00K-Earth Redeeming ItselfFor Christmas Eve, K-Earth has switched to wall-to-wall Christmas music. Lots of goodies are being played: Augie Rios, Frank Sinatra, "Man With all the Toys." Sadly, the KOST music is STILL adding some sappiness to the proceedings, but at least they've dug out some of the goodies.

Let's hope next year, program director Jhani Kaye finds a new post at another station, and takes his KOST music with him!Mariehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15465932438165154367noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-564698759278448498.post-72031962751450039512006-12-17T08:18:00.000-08:002006-12-17T08:39:44.878-08:00The Ventures are played! This year, in an effort to compete with KOST, they are playing easy listening artists such as Barry Manilow, Mannheim Steamroller, and the Carpenters in heavy rotation. Meanwhile, the Beach Boys, Elvis, and the Chipmunks are barely played.

Call, email, or write K-Earth to request more classic tunes, and less (or no) KOST music!Mariehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15465932438165154367noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-564698759278448498.post-53237105940288476512006-12-15T23:11:00.000-08:002006-12-15T23:26:22.897-08:00Friday's K-Earth Christmas Songs: 7am-11pm: DONDE ESTA SANTA CLAUS!Notes: Great morning show (DJ picking tunes?)

- Four Carpenters songs in one day
- Three Mannheim Steamroller songs
- Two Air Supply songs
- Only one Elvis and one Beach Boys
- Overall, the number of KOST songs is down.
- No Manilow today! Well, things have improved, but it's still a mixed bag.

The Good:

Christmastime is Here - Vince Guaraldi - Great addition. Classic.
Donde Esta Santa Claus - Augie Rios. A SoCal classic.
Blue Christmas - Elvis. Need more Elvis. This seems to be it this year.
Little Saint Nick - Beach Boys
Bing - White Christmas and Do You Hear What I Hear?
Nat King Cole and his chestnuts
the Chipmunks and their hula hoop wishes
Lots of Phil Spector music
The original Sleigh Ride. Love that horse.
McCartney's Wonderful Christmastime
Lennon's Happy Christmas
A nice Jim Croce tune
Lots of Perry Como, Andy Williams, and Johnny Mathis
Lots of Jingle Bell Rock
Holly Jolly Christmas
Feliz Navidad
Stevie Wonder's Someday at Christmas
Little Drummer Boy - the original

The Bad:

Cliff Richard - Little Town
Neil Diamond. His hits are often catchy, but this Christmas tune is a dud.
The Carpenters - Fine in small doses, but not four or five times a day.
Ray Parker Jr.'s Christmas song. Total snoozer from the guy who plagarized Ghostbusters from Huey Lewis.
Hall and Oates - Good group for K-Earth, but their version of Jingle Bell Rock stinks.

The Ugly:

Barry Manilow: Christmas is for the Children. Yikes!
Air Supply: White Christmas.
Mannheim Steamroller - about five songs by them. Complete and total cheese.
Kenny Loggins - Home for the Holidays
They are playing a song by a group called "Surface" that is unlistenable dreck.
New Kids. Only heard it once, but yup, they played a New Kids song. What's next, Milli Vanilli?

Overall, we're at least hearing some goodies, but things like the Chipmunks, Beach Boys, and Elvis are still in light rotation, while Mannheim Steamroller and the Carpenters receive heavy airplay. Other goodies (Bing, Como, McCartney, Sleigh Ride) also get very heavy play, so it's not a total disaster.Mariehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15465932438165154367noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-564698759278448498.post-20081802337733649722006-12-06T07:12:00.000-08:002006-12-06T07:15:28.899-08:00Positive News!Yesterday K-Earth played:

Elvis - Blue Christmas
Beach Boys - Little Saint Nick

and....The Chipmunks!

If you like an old Christmas song, call them up and request it.
